   actor
Born Simone Kaminker in Wiesbaden, Germany, to French parents, Simone Signoret, through her exceptional talent, went beyond the limits of theater and film to embrace social and political activism (alongside her husband yves montand), and literature (La nostalgie n'est plus qu'elle était, 1976; Adieu Volodia, 1985). Among her more than 50 films, a masterpiece, Casque d'or (1952), stands apart, but also commendable are Manèges (1950); La Ronde (1950); Thérèse Raquin (1953); Room at the Top (Great Britain, 1958), which won her an Oscar for Best Actress; and later in her career, L'Armée des Ombres (1969), Le Chat (1971), La Veuve Couderc (1971), La vie devant soi (1977), and Mama Rosa (1977), which won an Academy Award for best foreign film. in 1960, Signoret signed, with many other highly regarded intellectuals and artists, the manifesto appealing for an end to the Algerian War (see algeria).
